Hard Drive Recovery Cost: What Affects the Price
Hard drive recovery cost depends on the device, the drive and what has gone wrong with it, so Archway Tech Repairs does not publish a fixed price. A technician assesses the fault in our shop at 647 Holloway Road, London N19 5SE, and explains the options and the expected cost before any work starts. Call 020 7263 0607 for a quote.
When a laptop, MacBook or PC stops reading its drive, the first thing most people want to know is what it will cost to get their files back. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that there is no single figure. This guide explains what changes the price of hard drive recovery, what happens when you bring a device in, and how to avoid paying for recovery at all next time.

How much does hard drive recovery cost?
The cost of hard drive recovery varies with the device, the model and the specific fault, which is why we quote after an assessment rather than from a price list. We assess the fault and explain the repair options and expected cost before proceeding, so you know what to expect. If the cost changes once the device is opened, we tell you before continuing.
Data recovery and backup support are part of the work we do in store, alongside diagnostics, hard drive replacements and board-level motherboard repair. Repair times and costs vary depending on the device, extent of damage and availability of replacement parts.
What affects the price of hard drive data recovery?
The price depends on how much work it takes to reach your data and whether parts are needed. These are the things a technician looks at:
| What is checked | Why it matters for the cost |
|---|---|
| The device | A Windows laptop, a MacBook and a desktop PC are built differently, and the work involved in reaching the drive is different on each. |
| The model | Some models are quicker to open and work on than others, and part availability varies by model. |
| The fault | A device that powers on but will not start properly is a different job from one that will not turn on at all. |
| Whether the fault is on the board | If the problem sits on the motherboard rather than the drive, board-level repair may be needed before the data can be reached. |
| Water or liquid damage | Water damage is assessed case by case and carries separate terms. |
| Parts | If the drive or another part needs replacing, the cost and timing depend on the part and when it is available. |
Is there a charge for complex motherboard work?
Yes. Complex motherboard work can carry a non-refundable diagnostic or service charge. Our warranty policy explains that you will be advised of the full cost, including any non-refundable charges, at the time of booking, and that these charges apply whether or not the repair attempt is successful.
Can data always be recovered from a failed hard drive?
No. Whether data can be recovered depends on the device and on the fault, which is why the assessment comes first. A technician will look at the device, explain what is possible and what it is likely to cost, and you decide whether to go ahead.
We would rather be straight with you than promise something the device cannot deliver. Our terms ask customers to back up their data before submitting a device, because we cannot guarantee its preservation. If the device will not turn on and you cannot back up, tell us when you bring it in and we will talk you through data recovery and backup support.
What happens when I bring in a laptop or PC for data recovery?
You walk in to 647 Holloway Road with the device – no appointment needed – and a technician inspects it in store. The steps are the same as for any repair at our shop:
- Walk in or call – bring the device to 647 Holloway Road, London N19 5SE, or call 020 7263 0607 first if you want to check before you travel. The nearest station is Archway Underground.
- Free in-store check-up and diagnostics – the technician inspects the device and identifies the fault. Water-damaged devices are excluded from the free check-up and carry separate terms.
- Quote and options – the options and expected cost are explained before any work starts. If the cost changes once the device is open, you are told before work continues.
- Go-ahead and parts – the work proceeds; where a part has to be ordered, the timing depends on availability.
- Repair – carried out in store, including board-level motherboard work where it is needed.
- Testing – the device is checked before it goes back to you.
- Collection and payment.
Because diagnostics are done on site rather than the device being posted away to a repair centre, you can talk to the person looking at your device.
Should I replace the hard drive or try to recover the data?
It depends on what you need. If the files on the drive matter to you, ask about data recovery before anything is replaced. If you have a backup and only need the laptop working again, a hard drive replacement may be all that is needed. A technician can explain both options and what each is likely to cost.
For laptops, our laptop repair service covers hard drive replacements and data recovery alongside screens, batteries, software faults and motherboard diagnostics. For Apple laptops, see our MacBook repair page.
How can I avoid paying for data recovery in future?
Back up your important data regularly, in case your computer hardware fails. A backup takes a few minutes and means that, whatever happens to the device, your photos and files are safe somewhere else.
- Back up photos, videos, documents and work files.
- Check that the backup has actually finished and that the files open.
- Back up again before any repair, whatever the fault.
Our guide will my data be safe, and should I back up first? explains which repairs carry more risk to data and how to back up before you bring a device in.
Hard drive recovery: common questions
Can you tell me the price over the phone?
We do not publish fixed prices, because the cost depends on the device, the model and the fault. Call 020 7263 0607 to describe the problem, then bring the device in so a technician can assess it and give you the expected cost before any work starts.
Is the check-up free?
Yes, we offer a free in-store check-up, excluding water-damaged devices. Water damage is assessed case by case and has separate terms. Complex motherboard work can carry a non-refundable diagnostic or service charge, and you are told about it at the time of booking.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in to 647 Holloway Road, London N19 5SE. If you would like to check before you travel, call 020 7263 0607 or email info@archwaytechrepairs.co.uk.
How long does data recovery take?
It depends on the fault and on whether parts are needed. Many common repairs are completed the same day, depending on the fault and parts availability; complex or parts-dependent jobs take longer, and we will tell you what to expect.
My laptop got wet. Can you still get the data off?
Not always. Water damage is assessed case by case, which is why it is excluded from the free check-up and carries separate terms. Bring it in as soon as you can and tell us what happened.
Do you repair MacBooks and PCs as well as Windows laptops?
Yes. We repair laptops, MacBooks and PCs, as well as phones, iPads and tablets, Apple Watches and gaming consoles, all in the same shop.
