Will My Data Be Safe, and Should I Back Up First?

Will My Data Be Safe, and Should I Back Up First?

Yes, back up first. Most hardware repairs, such as screen replacements, do not affect your photos, contacts or files, but every repair is different. At Archway Tech Repairs, 647 Holloway Road, London N19 5SE, we recommend a backup before any repair, and we offer data recovery and backup support if your device will not turn on.

“Will I lose everything?” is often the first thing people ask when they hand over a broken phone, tablet or laptop. It is a fair question: your device holds your photos, messages, work files and passwords. This guide explains when data is usually safe, when it is at risk, how to prepare, and what we can do if you cannot back up because the device is too damaged.

Will my data be safe during a repair?

For most hardware repairs, yes. Replacing a cracked screen, a worn battery or a faulty charging port works on the hardware, not on the storage where your data lives, so most repairs can be completed without affecting your photos, contacts, apps or important files. Most screen replacements do not affect your personal data.

But “most” is not “all”, and we would rather be straight with you. Our terms and conditions ask you to back up your data before submitting your device. Some faults, and some devices, are unpredictable once they are opened, so a backup is the sensible first step.

Which repairs carry more risk to data?

The repairs where the outcome is least predictable are the ones most likely to involve data risk:

  • Water or liquid damage. Liquid can damage internal circuits, and water-damaged devices cannot always be saved. Irreparable damage is more likely with liquid-damaged devices.
  • Motherboard and board-level faults. Complex work on components such as the power IC, charging port circuit or display IC carries a non-refundable service fee, because the outcome cannot be guaranteed.
  • Software faults. Some software faults may need a factory reset, which removes what is stored on the device. We explain the repair options before any work starts.
  • Devices that will not power on. If a device is dead at the time of booking, we may be unable to fully assess its condition before it is opened.

Do I need to back up before a phone or laptop repair?

Yes, wherever you can. Backing up important data beforehand is always recommended, whatever the repair. A backup costs you a few minutes and means that, whatever happens to the device, your photos and files are safe somewhere else.

How you back up depends on the device. For iPhones and iPads, Apple Support explains the built-in backup options. For Samsung phones and tablets, Samsung Support UK sets out the steps for that device. For a laptop or MacBook, copy the files you care about to an external drive or a cloud storage account you already use.

A quick checklist before you hand your device in

  • Back up photos, videos, contacts and messages.
  • Check that the backup has actually finished and the files open.
  • Make a note of any passwords you will need once the device is back with you.
  • Tell the technician if anything on the device is irreplaceable, so that is part of the conversation from the start.
  • If the device has been in water, say so. Water-damaged devices are excluded from the free check-up and carry separate terms.

What if my device will not turn on and I cannot back up?

Then tell us when you bring it in. Data recovery and backup support are part of the work we do in store, alongside diagnostics and board-level motherboard repair. If the device will not turn on, ask us about data recovery and backup support when you bring it in, and a technician will assess it and explain the options and expected cost before any work begins.

Whether data can be recovered depends on the device and on the fault, which is why the assessment comes first.

Where is my device repaired?

In our walk-in shop at 647 Holloway Road, London N19 5SE. Repairs are carried out in store, with diagnostics done on site, rather than the device being posted away to a repair centre.

How does a repair work at Archway Tech Repairs?

  1. Walk in or call. Bring your device to 647 Holloway Road, London N19 5SE, or call 020 7263 0607. No appointment is needed.
  2. Free in-store check-up. A technician inspects the device and identifies the fault. Water-damaged devices are excluded from the free check-up.
  3. Quote and options. The repair options and expected cost are explained before any work starts. If the cost changes once the device is opened, you are told before work continues.
  4. Repair and testing. The repair is carried out in store and the device is checked before it goes back to you.
  5. Warranty. Applicable repairs are covered by our published warranty policy: 28 days on LCD/screen repairs and 14 days on applicable parts and charging port repairs, with one free re-repair for the same issue subject to the stated conditions.

Many common repairs are completed the same day, depending on the fault and parts availability.

Common questions about data and repairs

Will a screen replacement delete my photos?

Most screen replacements do not affect your personal data. We still recommend backing up important files before any repair wherever possible.

Will a battery or charging port repair wipe my phone?

Most hardware repairs, such as battery and charging port repairs, can be completed without affecting your photos, contacts, apps or files. Because every repair is different, back up first if you can.

Should I back up even for a simple repair?

Yes. Our terms ask you to back up your data before submitting your device, whatever the repair. It takes a few minutes and protects your photos and files whatever happens.

Can you get data off a phone that will not turn on?

Ask us when you bring it in. We offer data recovery and backup support, and a technician will assess the device and explain the options and cost before any work starts. Whether it is possible depends on the device and the fault.

My phone has been in water. Is my data lost?

Not necessarily, but water damage is unpredictable and water-damaged devices cannot always be saved. Bring it in as soon as you can, and read what to do immediately after dropping your phone in water.

Do you repair laptops and tablets too, or just phones?

We repair mobile phones, iPhones, Samsung devices, laptops, MacBooks, PCs, iPads and tablets, Apple Watches and gaming consoles. See our mobile phone repair and laptop repair pages.
